Is salvation by faith alone, or by faith plus works?

Let's discuss an important question in all of Christian theology. This question is a key difference between Biblical Christianity and most of the “Christian” cults. Is salvation by faith alone, or by faith plus works? Am I saved just by believing in Jesus, or do I have to believe in Jesus and do certain things?
Jesus + nothing = everything or
Jesus + anything = nothing.
So, what produces right standing with God, by faith in God's grace or by faith plus works?

Salvation is like your college degree
Degree is a qualification to get job

If you get a degree but don't get a job and work... The purpose of you getting a degree fails

If you don't get a degree you are not qualified for an interview


So, salvation is a qualification for higher purpose

Works are not the cause of salvation; works are the evidence of salvation. Ephesians 2:8–9 makes it clear that we are not saved by good works. Good works do not produce salvation. So, although we cannot be saved by our good works, when we are saved, we will produce good works. (Good works are the product of salvation.) 
“Faith alone saves, but saving faith is never alone.” True faith has actions. That’s the point James is making at James 2:14–26.
